Firefighters make good progress on Buck Fire; 40 percent containment

BOISE, Idaho, July 9, 2016 -- Due to moderate weather and cooler temperatures firefighters continue to make good progress containing the Buck Fire. The fire, now estimated to be 40 percent contained, still smolders within remaining pockets of interior heat.

Firefighters are working to secure the northern tip of the fire to prevent fire spread through spotting or windblown embers, while transitioning to the mop-up phase on other areas of the fire.

A cold front is predicted to slide across the fire area today by mid-to-late afternoon and with it the possibility of winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour, with much cooler temperatures likely to follow on Sunday. The winds will test containment and if no fire spreading occurs, that will give fire managers a measure of confidence in the security of existing line.

Road closures are in effect around the fire area, yet access to most of the surrounding recreation areas remains open to the public.
