Morning Update:
Firefighters continue meeting the main objective to keep the fire south of Lightning Creek, north and east of the Salmon River, and west of Little Berg Creek.  Building upon the success of Sunday’s efforts, on Mondaycrew’s patrolled firelines, mopped up hot spots and monitored the fire perimeter.  Helicopters continued to drop water to assist firefighters to keep the fire within the fire perimeter. On the northern flank, crews continued mopup along the existing line.  The eastern flank is considered contained and was monitored for any hot spots.
Activities planned for today include continued mopup and securing along the northern and southern flanks and monitoring on the eastern side. Rehabilitation of firelines will continue.  Resources are being released as suppression objectives are being met and to provide for other regional needs.
A dry cold front passed through the fire area yesterday reducing temperatures to the mid-80’s with humidity in the single to low teens.  Winds were consistent at 6-9 mph.  Today temperatures will be from 79-84 degrees with humidity 15-20 percent.  Winds will be light at 5 mph from the north.
Current Closures:
The closure area to the north includes trail 82, a portion of trail 136, to the east it includes a portion of trail 118 and is bordered by FS Road 221 (road 221, Grangeville-Salmon, is open), the southern border is road 1614 (road 1614 is open) and the perimeter to the west is the forest boundary.  FS Road, 263 lies within the perimeter and is closed (see for a map of the area closure).
Special Concerns:
Rafters and others using the Lower Salmon should be very conscientious of firefighting efforts, yielding the river to helicopters that may be dipping in the river.   Float groups are advised to stay together and not stop to watch the aerial support activities.   Rafters should pull over temporarily if they come upon a helicopter already dipping in the river, then continue through the area as quickly as possible when the helicopter leaves.
Road traffic along Highway 95 and County Road 1614 (Salmon River Rd) is encouraged to keep moving and not stop along the shoulders of the road to minimize risk associated with increased fire traffic.  Also expect increased logging traffic as operations have resumed after the weekend.
