Pioneer Fire Update for Tuesday, August 16th

Acres:              76,980             Containment:             50%          Personnel:  1,790
Resources assigned includes 44 crews, 11 helicopters, 72 engines, 10 dozers, 33 water tenders, 7 masticators

Last evening, winds pushed the north end of the Pioneer Fire further over Deadwood Ridge and eastward toward Clear Creek, where crews are preparing Forest Road 582 to act as a fuel break.

Firefighters completed the burnout along the west edge of the fire yesterday bringing fire along the ridge west of Grayback Creek to Highway 17 east of Danskin. The night shift worked through the night to assure the fire stayed within the containment line by patrolling the line looking for spot fires. Engines remained in place around nearby homes. Additional engines are in the Lowman area to provide structure protection, if necessary.
Burnout operations were completed on the east side of the fire above Trapper Flat. Smoke plumes will be likely today in this area as unburned pockets of vegetation burn within the containment line.

The southern end of the fire is largely contained. Suppression repair and mop up is still occurring.

Fire activity will continue to be high today as the weather remains hot and dry.

Last night, electricity supply to parts of Lowman was interrupted for about 6 hours because of fire activity near powerlines directly above firefighters.

Level 1 evacuation orders are in place for Lowman and for the Grimes Pass area east of Garden Valley.

Highway 17 remains closed in the fire area, but is open from Banks to the Danskin boat launch, a popular river launch area. Fire managers are asking drivers to be cautious and aware of fire engine and heavy equipment travelling on the route.
