Power Line Fire Update 8/11/16
Pocatello, ID – The Power Line Fire started on Fort Hall lands Wednesday afternoon. Firefighting resources from Idaho Falls District Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Caribou-Targhee National Forest (CTNF), Power County, and Chubbuck Fire Department arrived quickly to assist tribal resources. The short turnaround time for refill at the Pocatello Airport made aircraft an extremely effective tool in limiting fire spread.
Fire officials underestimated the size of the fire this morning, which was mapped at 3,106 acres. The Incident Commander is expecting the fire to be fully contained this evening. Fire activity was minimal throughout the day and was mainly confined to interior areas where heavy fuel pockets continued to smolder.
The cause of the Power Line Fire is still under investigation but there is a likelihood that it resulted from lightning that passed through the area several days ago. It primarily spread in grass and sage intermixed with pinyon and juniper trees.
Resources currently assigned to the fire will start to be released once the fire is contained. Minimal personnel will continue to monitor the fire and patrol the perimeter until the fire is completely out. This will be the last update unless significant activity occurs.
