GAP FIRE UPDATE

POCATELLO, ID – The Gap
Fire started yesterday afternoon in the Portneuf area just south of
Pocatello, Idaho by Century High School. The fire burned approximately
300-acres of public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Investigators attributed the cause of the
fire to shooting; no further details are available at this time.
The fire is 40 % contained. Containment
indicates firefighters have made their way around the entire fire perimeter and
do not anticipate any further growth. Firefighters expect the fire to be
completely controlled by June 10.
Firefighters are using Century High School
as a base location for camp and supply deliveries. Residents near the area should expect to see multiple
engines and one handcrew on the hill today putting out hotspots and continuing
to secure the fire line.
The Gap Fire is burning in cheat grass,
sage brush, and juniper. Resources
currently assigned to the fire include:

Fire season has started in Eastern Idaho.
Expect to see smoke in the Pocatello area as fuels within the fire’s interior
continue to burn. Suppression activities will continue throughout today.
Remember to check weather conditions before going out to shoot. Hot, dry and
windy conditions spread fires quickly. The BLM Fire Prevention Order for Idaho
is in effect till October 20, which means shooting exploding targets, steel
core or tracer ammunition on BLM lands is prohibited.
