POCATELLO, ID –  The Gap Fire started yesterday afternoon in the Portneuf area just south of Pocatello, Idaho by Century High School. The fire burned approximately 300-acres of public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).  Investigators attributed the cause of the fire to shooting; no further details are available at this time.

The fire is 40 % contained. Containment indicates firefighters have made their way around the entire fire perimeter and do not anticipate any further growth. Firefighters expect the fire to be completely controlled by June 10.

Firefighters are using Century High School as a base location for camp and supply deliveries.  Residents near the area should expect to see multiple engines and one handcrew on the hill today putting out hotspots and continuing to secure the fire line.

The Gap Fire is burning in cheat grass, sage brush, and juniper.  Resources currently assigned to the fire include:

Engines:  11
Dozers:  2
Hand Crews:  1

Fire season has started in Eastern Idaho. Expect to see smoke in the Pocatello area as fuels within the fire’s interior continue to burn. Suppression activities will continue throughout today. Remember to check weather conditions before going out to shoot. Hot, dry and windy conditions spread fires quickly. The BLM Fire Prevention Order for Idaho is in effect till October 20, which means shooting exploding targets, steel core or tracer ammunition on BLM lands is prohibited.
