Deer Park Fire

Deer Park Fire

Start Date: 8/25/2017 at 12:30 p.m.

Location and Jurisdiction: West of Menan Butte and north of Deer Park, 12 miles west of Rexburg, Idaho on BLM

Cause: Human, under investigation

Fire Size: 15,000 acres

Percent Contained: 0% contained

Structures Threatened:  The gun range west of Menan Butte is threatened and was evacuated. Structure protection has been implemented for homes near Butte road and Twin Buttes road, they have not been evacuated at the time of this release. This is precautionary in case the fire changes directions.

Fuels and Terrain:  Grass and brush

Fire Behavior: Fire behavior is extreme.

Fire Crews/Resources: 21 engines, 2 dozers, 3 water tenders. 6 single engine air tankers and 2 heavy air tankers laid retardant on the fire. (93 firefighters)

Evacuations:  The gun range, Unified Sportsmen’s Club, west of Menan Butte was evacuated and remains closed to the public.

Closures:  Highway 33 from I-15 to mile marker 68 is closed.

Summary:  The Deer Park Fire started around 12:30 p.m. and was human caused. The fire has been burning in grass and brush, driven by wind. The fire made a six mile push to the north crossing highway 33, which remains closed from I-15 to mile marker 68. The most active portion of the fire is the north end.
