Twin Falls District BLM Fire Update

Both the Mammoth and Shoestring fires areas are expecting thunderstorm activity throughout the week. Gusty outflow winds produced by these passing storms could be up to 40 miles per hour.  

Mammoth Fire
·         Located: 7 miles north of Shoshone  
·         Size: estimated 50,182 acres
·         Contain: estimated 8/7/2017 at 8 p.m.
·         Control: estimated 8/10/2017 at 8 p.m.
·         Resources: 24 engines, two type two initial attack hand crews, one type one hot shot crew, 20 overhead, four dozers, three water tenders, one camp crew  
·         Fuel type: grass and brush
·         Fire behavior: moderate
·         Structures: yes- one primary residence and two minor structures
·         Cause: undetermined

Yesterday’s burn out operation was successful. Most of the forward progression has stopped. Crews are improving containment lines and mopping up hotspots. Some interior burning is expected today, but should not cause any additional growth.

Shoestring Fire

·         Located: 6 miles north of Wendell  
·         Size: 35,737 acres
·         Contain: 8/7/2017 at 6 p.m.
·         Control: 8/9/2017 at 6 p.m.
·         Resources: five engines, five overhead, two dozers, three helicopters, four water tenders, one camp crew
·         Fuel type: grass and brush
·         Fire behavior: smoldering
·         Structures: none
·         Cause: undetermined

Crews continue to monitor and mop up hot spots. Some interior pockets are expected to burn together today, but no additional acreage is expected.
