Moon Dance Fire Update - Sept. 3 at 2 PM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 3, 2017

(OROFINO) – Suppression efforts continue as the Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) assisted by several US Forest Service Units including the Nez-Perce Clearwater (NPC), and Payette National Forests (PNF) battle to contain the structure fire that has now turned into a wildland fire.

The Moon Dance fire began as an early morning house fire in the Sunnyside Bench area when flames ignited grass, brush and timber near the structure and spread to more than 12 acres.

In a time when resources are very thin, the PNF and NPC have both contributed valuable resources to this firefighting effort with smoke jumpers and Type 3 IC from the PNF, and a Hotshot crew from the NPC. All available initial attack resources from the Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protective Association (CPTPA), Sunnyside Fire Department, and multiple volunteers are actively suppressing the fire.

Firefighting efforts are also being supported by air resources with multiple water and retardant drops early allowing for more direct ground attack this afternoon.

An additional 30-40 structures are threatened and the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office has issued a Level 2 Evacuation Notice (be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice) for the following areas:  Old Peck Grade, Blackberry Lane, Bear Paw Lane, Moondance Lane, River Pointe Lane, Canyon Vista Lane and Pecan.

The Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office has also closed the Old Peck Grade for public safety due to wildfire. Information can be found on the Clearwater County Facebook page or by calling the Fire Information Line at 208-661-5292 or the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office at 208-476-4521.
