Strychnine Fire Update - Sept. 3

(Deary) – Fire crews are currently battling a fire five miles northeast of Harvard. The Strychnine Fire is about 900 acres and is burning on steep slopes in heavy timber and brush.

Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) is being assisted by US Forest Service Palouse Range District, the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and volunteer fire crews from Moscow, Potlatch, Troy, and Deary are also on scene.  The fire is currently being managed as a Type 3 incident, however a Type 2 Team has been ordered. There are currently 17 engines plus rural resources on the fire including 3 dozers, and 3 water tenders.

Air support has been dropping both water and retardant on the fire, with additional resources ordered for today. Currently two Type 2 helicopters are assigned and flying reconnaissance gathering information on the fire’s size and behavior.

Latah County Sheriff’s office and law enforcement personnel from the US Forest Service have evacuated Laird Park campground, residences along highway 6, and are working to alert dispersed campers in the area.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Winds and terrain have made battling the blaze difficult.

More information will be available throughout the day as assessments come in and additional resources arrive.
