8 Mile Fire burning near Soda Springs

Start Date: 09/22/2018 at approximately 2 p.m.

Location and Jurisdiction: 5 miles southeast of Soda Springs, ID.  Burning on private land and is threatening BLM and private forested lands.  

Cause: Under investigation

Fire Size: approximately 300 acres

Percent Contained: 0%, containment estimated for 9/23/2018
Fire Behavior: Active fire behavior with the fire running to the north - northeast

Structures Threatened:  Yes

Fuels and Terrain:  Burning in grass, brush and scattered timber.

Fire Crews/Resources:  5 engines and 2 dozers are enroute.  A handcrew and a helicopter have been ordered. Air support include 4 airtankers.  Additional resources supporting the fire are from Caribou and Franklin Counties. 

Evacuations:  Evacuations currently taking place north of the fire.

Closures:  No closures.

Summary: The 8 Mile Fire started the afternoon of 9/22/2018 approximately five miles south of Soda Springs, ID southwest of State Highway 30.  The fire is burning on private property, threatening private forested and BLM lands.  Structures and powerlines are currently threatened.  County officials are evacuating structures to the north of the fire.  Multiple agencies are assisting with firefighting efforts including Caribou and Franklin Counties, BLM and Forest Service.  A handcrew and helicopter have been ordered to help suppress fire in the more inaccessible areas of the fire.
